Andreessen Horowitz

Hello, Data Geek.

Today, I wanted to share a different kind of role here, but inside a challenging industry in one of the most iconic Venture Capital firms in the world: Andreessen Horowitz.

The role itself is called Partner 20, Senior Social Media Manager, and if you play your cards in the right way; this could be a lucrative and career-defining move for you.

First things, first: What is Andreessen Horowitz

If you are in tech, you must know who are they.

I will use the same brief description they use in the job description of this particular role:

Founded in Silicon Valley in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (known as "a16z") is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. We are stage agnostic: We invest in seed to venture to late-stage technology companies, across bio + healthcare, consumer, crypto, enterprise, fintech, games, and companies building toward American dynamism. a16z has $35B in assets under management across multiple funds.

We’ve established a team that is defined by respect for the entrepreneur and the company-building process; we know what it’s like to be in the founder’s shoes. We’ve invested in companies like Affirm, Airbnb, Coinbase, Databricks, Devoted Health, EQRx, Figma, GitHub, Instacart, OpenSea, Roblox, Stripe, and Substack. Our team is at the forefront of new technology, helping founders and their companies impact and change the world.

Again: I don’t want to take a lot of time to explain who they are because probably you know it already.

I will concentrate better on the role itself.

Social Media and Content in general are playing a key part in the Venture Capital industry today.

There are many VC firms out there that are very prolific content machines.

Some of my favorite examples are Bessemer Venture Partners with its Centaur and State of Cloud reports, First Round Capital with its amazing Review publication, Greylock Ventures with its Greymatter podcast plus LinkedIn newsletter (a very interesting channel to explore these days), and many more.

Andreessen Horowitz is part of this new content wave trend as well with its podcasts, articles, reports, and YouTube channels.

Even they created a media entity called Future to group together all the efforts in it.

And I believe this effort will only increase with time. I understood this for sure when they hired Steph Smith as the host of the a16z Podcast.

Steph is one of the most creative minds I know in this space. So, bringing her to a16z was a serious steal.

a16z on Social

When you start analyzing the content around all platforms, you can see that a16z is present in the majority of them, except for TikTok (although the account is created there):

And if you collect the followers from some of the members of the firm as well only on Twitter, you can see that their audience is very big as a group:

  • Marc Andreessen (@pmarca): 1.2 Million

  • Ben Horowitz (@bhorowitz): 637,400

  • Steph Smith (@stephsmithio): 135,200

  • Connie Chan (@conniechan): 54,300

  • David Ulevitch (@davidu): 49,900

  • Martin Casado (@martin_casado): 39,200

  • Katherine Boyle (@KTmBoyle): 31,900

  • Vijay Pande (@vijaypande): 29,000

I don’t know the exact numbers for the a16z podcasts, but I assume that they are getting thousands of downloads per month.

However, during the research, I found that although they are already on the major platforms, they could be better in some of them if they create native content for that specific platform.

So, let’s concentrate on the ideas now.

Let’s discuss two ideas on how to approach this job application (THE REAL MEAT)
