Hello, Data Geek.

Today I wanted to share with you a role with a big future impact; working side by side with one of the most interesting teams in the world.

The company I wanted to write about is Isomorphic Labs, and the role itself is called Software Engineer (Data), based in Lausanne, Switzerland.

First things, first: What is Isomorphic Labs?

Isomorphic Labs is a new Alphabet company that is reimagining drug discovery through a computational- and AI-first approach.

We are on a mission to accelerate the speed, increase the efficacy and lower the cost of drug discovery. You'll be working at the cutting edge of the new era of 'digital biology' to deliver a transformative social impact for the benefit of millions of people.

Isomorphic Labs’s basement is on the shoulders of its sister company DeepMind, the one which developed AlphaFold, the solution to the 50-year grand challenge of protein folding.

If you don’t know what is Protein folding, I encourage you to watch this short video here:

Why Isomorphic Labs

My modest understanding of the problems that Isomorphic Labs is solving is this one: the process of developing new treatments and drugs is a very long process, with long cycles from 10 to 15 years to develop a single drug.

Can you imagine if we could develop the same drugs using half of that time? Or perhaps, finding better and faster ways to test the new drugs using AI and Machine Learning.

That’s why I said that this role is about IMPACT.

And why the HQs of the company are based in London and Lausanne?

I assume that they are using these strategic locations based on the potential for recruiting.

Top pharma companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific, Merck, GSK, Galderma, Johnson & Johnson, B.Braun, Novartis, and many more have big offices in Lausanne and London.

Let’s share some ideas on how to apply for this role.

Let’s discuss 3 ideas on how to approach this job application (THE REAL MEAT)

Idea # 1: Take one or two biochemistry courses before the application. You will need it

Here you have two courses that could be helpful:

Idea # 2: Watch this video called “Using AI to Accelerate Scientific Discovery” with Demis Hassabis (CEO and founder of Isomorphic Labs)

It’s not just to watch the video, it’s to watch it, take your notes, make your own research and bring with you some interesting questions to the first chat with the recruiter. First impressions matter in this kind of environment.

Idea # 3: Read this post from Google Cloud called “Google Cloud Biotech Acceleration Tooling” and try to replicate it in our own GCP environment.

Isomorphic Labs is an Alphabet company, so everything you will do there will be on Google Cloud.

This post will provide you with the foundations of working with this kind of data on GCP. So, a must-read from my perspective.

If you do it right, you can join one of the most innovative teams in the era of AI, Machine Learning, and digital biology.

Good luck with your job application.
