Starting with the right foot in the year 2024

Hi Data Geek.

I hope you spent some quality time with your family and friends in the final weeks of 2023. I did it, and it feels amazing to laugh, tell silly jokes, and enjoy good food (especially if there are some recipes from my home country).

We are already in 2024, and today I watched a very interesting reel from the Fast Company’s Instagram account:

I agree with all they shared there, but one particular thing resonated more than others: Layoffs will continue in 2024, and if you want my honest opinion about it: the companies are already used to using this move; so they don’t fear it anymore.

I expect to see larger layoffs this year; it’s a hard pill to swallow but it’s true.

So, I have 2 points simple advice for you.

Advice # 1: Complementary skills

My advice to you? Become a more valuable Data Engineer, Data Scientist, or Data Analyst. How? Complement the knowledge you have with more side skills. For example:

  • If you are a Data Engineer, why not learn how to deploy Machine Learning models, or perhaps why not learn to build your visualizations?

  • If you are a Data Analyst, why not learn to deploy the data pipelines you are responsible for?

  • If you are a Data Scientist, why not learn more about the Business side of your company or area?

These complementary skills and knowledge can make you a stronger and more valuable employee.

But just be aware that anyone can be part of a layoff, even the more valuable employees.

Advice # 2: Build your own thing ASAP

Your knowledge can be more valuable than you think, and perhaps the problems you have solved already in your Data Analytics career, another person can use your thoughts, ideas, and best practices to solve them on their own.

So: start building your own “empire” my friend.

Build a newsletter like this one, start a video podcast, build a course, or use the knowledge shared by Noah Kagan in his new book and build a new business (there are some amazing perks if you buy the book)

Don’t wait more for that: use this fuel for the weekend and start this Sunday to work on your dreams. 2024 is the Year of the Action, not the “Year of Words in the Air”.

Happy New Year, my friend.
